How to Paint Wood Paneling
Wood paneling is easy to paint if you follow good surface preparation procedures. Removing the paneling can be a big job. The paneling may be glued to the drywall underneath it and the drywall underneath it may not be finished very well. The thought of just tearing out the paneling is enough to make many homeowners decide to simply leave it in place and paint over it. Paneling is painted over all the time and it looks good when painted, so if the thought of tearing out , patching the drywall and finishing it doesn't appeal to you - there is nothing wrong with leaving it in place and painting it.

KT Tape: Tennis Elbow
CHECK OUT THE NEW VERSION: bit.ly What is Tennis Elbow? "Tennis Elbow" is the common name describing the painful condition Lateral Epicondylitis (LE), speculatively caused by overuse of the forearm resulting in elbow pain. To no surprise, playing tennis and other racquet sports can be a culprit for its development. However, a variety of other activities or sports can also be the cause of this painful condition. Painters, plumbers, carpenters or others frequently and repetitively employing the use of forearm extensor muscles with gripping objects are prone to developing tennis elbow. The condition is not entirely inflammatory in nature, but rather degenerative by way of micro-tearing between the common extensor tendon and periosteum of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.

Yep, nothing like six idiots running around in the backyard shooting each other. We play Airsoft a bit differently than most, we shove the tactical mumbo-jumbo in favor of the "he-who-cries-first-loses" version of the game. The guncam (seen at the end of the film) was an Aiptek digital camcorder attatched to my shotty with blue painters tape. A pair of workshop goggles was placed over the lens to protect it. Don't complain about the smudge in the corner, it was the glasses. Music is Stone Temple Pilots. Give it a five, more videos soon. w00t! 1000 views! PS yes, my friend does scream like a girl.

Choosing Paint:

Paint comes in 2 standard compositions; alkyd (oil based) or acrylic (water based). For interior applications the standard recommendation is acrylic paint for its quick drying time, easy clean up and minimal toxicity during application. The only exception is if the wall has been previously painted with an oil base. Acrylics do not adhere well and will often cause cracking and peeling
To determine if the existing coat of paint is oil or water based - Apply a touch of mineral spirits on some out of the way space on your wall. Acrylics will be unaffected. The alkyd will dissolve.
Choosing to prime is dependent on specific wall circumstances. The following questions will help determine if you need to prime the wall:
Do I need to cover stains? Stains include crayon, ink and water spots. Am I dramatically changing the color of the wall? If moving from a dark to a light toned color, priming will limit the number of coats needed to apply to provide an even spread of the new color. Tinting the primer with the new color also speeds up this covering process. Is my wall a raw surface? Drywall, wood paneling or some other rough, unfinished surface will need to be primed.
Use an acrylic based primer when your primary color is acrylic. If an oil, either one will work.
Choosing Paint Color:
When choosing a wall color, buy small sample cans of your selections. Each color should be painted on a 2' square piece of foam core board. Position the boards around the room during different times of the day or night, to get a sense of how the color will change as the light shifts. Test color in natural light as well as with evening lamps.
Choosing Price Points:
"You get what you pay for" especially holds true when selecting paint. The quality of this product is reflected in the price. Look for the word "premium" on paint cans. This is a standard term for paint that is formulated for:
Higher percentage of pigment and binding agents Greater durability Fade resistance Superior can to can color matching Fewer coats needed to cover surface Better overall sheen results
Premium Paints usually run approximately to a gallon.
Selecting Brushes and Rollers
Brushes:
The best type of brush to use on standard interior walls is a quality synthetic. Synthetic brushes will grab more paint, keep their shape during paint application and their tapered cuts will make corners and edges easier to maneuver. Smaller angled brushes work well for finishing around windows. Larger angles are good for your trims and moldings.
To test the quality of the brush, pull gently on the bristles. Tug on the brush bristles, if several bristles pull out easily this is a cheaply made brush that will lose bristles in the paint or on the wall. Keep shopping.
Rollers
Choose your roller by evaluating the walls surface. Rough surfaces need a longer nap roller (orange colored). Smoother surfaces will need the smaller nap (yellow). Testing for a quality roller is to simply separate the nap, if you see the cardboard core, keep looking. Also, "squish" the roller to see if it returns to its original shape quickly.
Do not use foam rollers. These are best used for stencils and other decorative wall treatments.
Preparing the Room - Step by Step
Step 1 - The best way to paint a room is to start with it being entirely empty. If this is not possible begin by pushing everything, including window treatments, to the center of the room. Cover with drop cloths. Place a large trash can in the middle of the room, lined with plastic, to keep your work space clean and ready for any mishaps.
Step 2 - Turn off electrical power to safely remove all switch plates, fixtures and outlets. If painting the ceiling with a ceiling fixture, drop its canopy allowing it to rest on the chandelier or fan. If applicable, remove door knobs.
Step 3 - Clean and repair wall. For dirt and grease spots, use TSP (trisodium phosphate). This is a non soap cleaner that needs no rinsing for spot cleaning. Dust down the rest of the wall with a dry rag. Next, repair any dents, dings or small holes in the wall.
Once repair is completed, vacuum entire room, including the walls and base boards.
Step 4 - Tape off areas to protect using the painter's tape. This tape is specifically designed to leave no sticky residue on wall. Choose blue tape for latex paint applications. The purple is for the alkyds.
The secret to painter's tape is to pull it off immediately after painting. Removing it while the paint is still wet will allow you to deal with smears and drips before the paint dries. By letting the paint dry with the tape, could cause the paint to peel with the tapes removal.
Painting the Room - Step by Step
Step 1 - Always keep fresh air circulating. All paint is toxic, to some degree. The best days to paint are ones with low humidity and open window opportunities. Consider a mask and goggles as well.
Step 2 - Unless you have just returned from the paint store, stir the paint to ensure pigment consistency.
Step 3 - If painting the ceiling is in your design scheme, start there. Start with edges and then, using an extension bar, finish the rest of the surface. Avoid using a ladder to paint; it's hard to paint evenly.
Step 4 - When loading a brush, dip into the paint up to 1/3 of the brushes bristles. Tap - don't scrape the excess paint off the brush.
Step 5 - To avoid wrist fatigue, hold the brush like a pencil when applying paint to wall. When working around windows and trim, blend the paint out as you move away from the trim. Leaving a crisp edge will be harder to cover up with the roller.
Step 6 - Finish the large surfaces with a roller. Roll the roller into the paint tray until the paint covers all sides without dripping. Begin applying on wall using a "W" type pattern. Go over the wall again with long floor to ceiling finishing strokes to even out the application.
Step 7 - If touch ups need to be done, give the paint 24 hours to dry.
Paint is the most affordable way to dramatically change the look of any room. By applying these painting steps to your living space will ensure a result that you will be delighted with.

The Dangers of Pricing Too Low

Painting Job Price Guide for Contractors
There will be a minority of prospective customers in your market who consider price as the sole factor in determining which painting contractor to use. These 'cheapo' clients are often not worth the time and headaches that come along with them. There is also another group of clients that will associate a low price with a potentially poor quality job and pass up on the cheapest bid that they get.
Painting Job Price Guide for Contractors

If you consistently price at levels that are so low that your ability to make a profit on jobs is compromised then you won't be in business for long. In general, pricing at low levels will have a negative impact on your business and the local industry as a whole.
Market Rates or Above
Prospective customers will shop around so it us useful if you have an idea of what kind of bids they will get from your competitors. In general you should try to price your services in line with market rates or a little higher. Don't be afraid to ask for premium prices if you feel that you can achieve them with your salesmanship or brand power. Many customers will take your reputation and professionalism into account as well rather than making a decision based solely on price.
The Competition
While you don't necessarily have to price your services in line with market rates in your area it does help to have a rough idea of what competitors are charging. Do some investigation and try to establish what the going rate is for painting work on an hourly basis. Get some 'dummy' quotes direct from competitors and also try chatting to paint suppliers as they may have a good handle on the local market.
Pricing Different Kinds of Painting Jobs
Painters generally have different ways of pricing different kinds of jobs. Painters that are quoting on large commercial jobs often calculate rates based on floor sizes in square feet. Residential house painters are more likely to prefer to quote on a daily or hourly basis.
An Estimating System
While pricing does come down to intuition to a certain extent, it is not likely that you will be able to come up with an accurate price without some kind of system. You can get estimating software that can help you to price up jobs or you can simply put together your own formulas and use a calculator on the spot. You need to have an estimating system that is quick and as accurate as possible.
A Variety of Methods
In order to be able to put forward a quote to a client you need to be able to estimate the costs that will be involved in completing the job. Costs are made up mostly of materials such as paint and 'man hours' or labor. Other costs may include painters tape, paint brushes and depreciation on equipment. Don't forget transportation costs and overheads like advertising and phone bills.
Estimating the amount of time involved to complete a paint job comes down to experience. Some painters charge based on the number of rooms to be painted and others estimate the wall areas that need painting in square feet.
Painters basically have to make an estimate of time required and make adjustments for any difficulty factors. Painting contractors soon learn to allow for prep time and clean up after the job. If there are light switches and other fittings to be painted around then this obviously adds to preparation and painting time. Ceilings are more time consuming to paint than walls.
The basic formula is to work out total man hours and multiply this by an hourly rate of pay that is close to what other painting companies are charging. Then you can add on the costs for the job and a suitable amount as profit, if an appropriate hourly rate has not already been allocated for the owner.
Inspections
Unless you are quoting hourly rates, you should never give people a price without inspecting the areas of a property that require painting. There are just too many variables and the chances of getting a nasty surprise are just too great.
A Safety Cushion
As estimating is not an exact science it doesn't hurt to quote a little bit higher so that you have a safety cushion if the job proves to be more costly than you first anticipated. If you work out your expected costs, add on profit and then allow for 10% extra for unanticipated expenses then you should be fine on average

How to Paint - The 10 Most Common Painting Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
No URL
With today's economy and all, it seems that there is a growing trend for people to do their own panting, yet they will buy paint for their home without really thinking about what they are really getting for their money.
2. Using Spackle Instead Of Using What The Wall Is Made Out Of (Drywall Compound)...
Everyone uses this thing called Spackle. Sure it is lightweight, fast drying, and sands easy on smaller areas but it also leaves sheen or flashing marks under flat paint. If you have ever tried to fix a tape seam on a ceiling using spackle you will soon become a believer in drywall compound.
3. Not Using Primer...
If you ever go to commercial places (public bathrooms is a good example) many times you will see that the metal entry door was repainted and that the new paint is peeling off in the areas where hands push on the door a lot as well as other places.
The door was originally painted with an alkyd enamel finish and some employee of the store was told to re-paint it. So they were given latex paint to use and now you have a peeling, unsound finish.
I see cupboards and cabinets done wrong in homes all the time and there is peeling paint on them which lasts for years. This peeling paint even gets on things like plates and dishes and sticks to them due to static cling.
4. Not Painting the Ceilings...
Sometimes I will do an estimate to paint several rooms in someone's home and they want the walls painted but not the ceilings. Even though the ceilings are white they still look dingy and should be freshened up with a fresh coat of white. It also makes cutting in along the top of the walls a lot easier also when painting the walls.
5. Creating Patches or Streaks...
One of the drawbacks of using latex paint is it is notorious for leaving patches and streaks. Using lower-grade paints only make it worse. If you ever take an angular look down the sides of people's walls you will see patchy areas. You can even see where they rolled in an irregular fashion. Using a quality wall primer underneath the finish coat that works with all paint finishes helps a lot.
6. Not Knowing How To Properly Paint a Door...
People usually don't cut in the sides and edges of doors properly either. When it comes to recessed doors they don't always brush out the door with the grain or the way the door was put together. They don't use primer first for converting alkyd to latex or for even re-painting alkyd over alkyd. The end result is paint failure in the form of peeling or chipping.
7. Painting Over Electrical Sockets and Covers...
Old sockets and the covers can be replaced with new modern-looking white ones. This looks really nice when re-painting a room and wanting to do a complete job.
8. Crude Cut-in Lines Along the Ceiling Edge...
Most people don't cut in good at the top of the ceiling and it looks bad. Using the right paintbrush plus taking your time helps.
9. Only Using One Coat - Applying only one coat can cause fade-through as well as skipped areas.
10. Screw Up a Professional Paint Job in a Nice Home...
Many times someone will move into a home that was previously painted by a professional painter. Not knowing anything about enamels, people can quickly screw up the woodwork, windows and doors as well as the walls.

How to Paint Wood Paneling
The universal rule of surface preparation is: "Clean - Dull - Dry".

Lead paint note:
Do not sand or scour (with a scouring pad), or in any way abrade or disturb the paneling varnish or clear coat finish if your house was built prior to 1978. Lead was banned (in America) for use in residential paints and varnishes in 1978. Do not proceed any further if your house was built prior to 1978 - it would be best to let a trained and qualified professional do the work instead. To learn more about the hazards of lead in paints and coatings see EPA's lead page: http://www.epa.gov/lead
Cleaning
Extremely important to the painting of paneling is the cleaning of it. There may be layers of "Pledge" and residues from various cleaning solutions, and perhaps a bit of "grime" and dirt from years of service.
A good cleaning solution for cleaning the paneling is called "Krud Kutter". As the name implies, it is designed for cutting and removing all sorts of "krud". I use the spray bottle version of this and spray it on and let it "dwell" on the surface for five minutes or so to give it a chance to work, then wipe it off with the "Shop Towel" type of heavy duty paper towels. I also use a scouring pad in conjunction with the Krud Kutter (on homes built after 1978 only). The procedure is as follows: Spray on the Krud Kutter, allow it to dwell five minutes or so, then scour the wet surface with the scouring pad, then wipe it off. I work in small 4' x 4' sections and work my way around the room this way. You will need to protect all electrical outlets and switches with duct tape to prevent them from the Krud Kutter ( You should also turn the electrical power off to the room while doing the cleaning to prevent accidental electrical shock ), Also cover up any light fixtures etc.. with plastic and duct tape to waterproof them.
Clean all the paneling as described above and when you are finished, go back and re-clean it a second time. Seriously, I always clean the paneling completely - twice, that way you know it is clean and you did not miss any spots. Cleaning is probably the most important step in preparing the paneling for painting.
Priming
After the cleaning is done, allow the paneling to dry out. Once dry, you may proceed to priming the paneling. Priming is important to ensure adhesion to the paneling and to block any staining that may occur. The best primer for paneling are the solvent types of universal stain blocking and bonding primers. You can either use shellac or oil (alkyd ) primer for this purpose - Zinsser's BIN or Coverstain work well for priming paneling.
Test the adhesion first before priming the whole room
The purpose of testing first before priming all the paneling is to ensure that the paneling was cleaned well enough and that there will be no adhesion problems down the road - before proceeding any further.
How to test adhesion
The way to test adhesion is to do a cross cut tape test. You will want to check a variety of spots throughout the room with the tape test.
Apply the primer to the paneling in small 4" square patches and allow them to dry and cure overnight. The next day you will come back and using a razor knife cut a "tick - tack - toe" cross hatch cut into the primer. After the primer is cross cut , apply a piece of masking tape (regular masking tape - not the easy release type) or duct tape over the cross cuts and rub it down. Then take the duct tape and pull it off sharply. If the paint pulls off - you will need to further clean and perhaps pole sand with fine (220 grit ) sandpaper to get the paneling ready for painting. Test all the spots the same way. If the adhesion passes ( I.e. the primer did not pull off with the tape ) then you are ready to proceed with total priming of the whole room.
Tinting the primer
You may tint the primer to approximate or match the finish paint color. Both BIN and Coverstain can be tinted with universal colorants ( up to 2 ounces per gallon) to come close or match the finish color. Tinting the primer acts as a first coat and makes finish painting easier to cover or hide the underlying paneling. Ask the paint store that you purchase the primer from about tinting it.
Painting
Once the paneling is cleaned and primed you may paint it in any latex (or oil if you wish) paint that you desire. The finish painting is the easy part. Use a ¾ inch roller nap to help with pushing the paint into the paneling grooves. The best way to do this is to roll the paint on and then with light pressure "lay it off" to smooth it out and minimize roller texture.
